"...rapidly establishing herself as Cleveland's Essential Journalist..."
- Bill Callahan, community housing organizer and former CDC director

I sadly and involuntarily left journalism in February 2009, when I was laid off from the Cleveland Scene/Free Times. It was a shock. Investigative journalism had been the ideal combination of storytelling and social justice. What could possibly take its place?

Researching, reporting, writing and creating multi-media projects for social justice non-profits. That's what. And it's been an incredible, rewarding journey.

I've been telling stories in this manner now for more than a year. Take Empowering & Strengthening Ohio's People (ESOP). Those who continue to be hammered by the seemingly endless foreclosure crisis in Ohio find ESOP every day. You can read the blog I run for ESOP.

And here's a video narrative, "Fight Back, Move Forward," that I produced, wrote and directed for ESOP last year.

Such work is, ultimately, about engagement. It uses the power of stories to impact state and federal legislation, bring money and donors into ESOP's fold and generate public discussion, with and without the traditional news media.

So this website is now an archive of my journalism days. Here you'll find my reporting, dating back to 2004, on Cleveland, Cuyahoga County and Ohio.

I've written about everything from the environment to economic development. From the foreclosure crisis that hit Cleveland first to the homelessness that has always been here. From inner-city communities over-run by gangs to the few who persistently fight for these neighborhoods' survival.

The kind of newspaper journalism I practiced seems doomed. So new ways to share information through stories are needed now more than ever.
